Day 5 – Stuck My Toe in the Baltic

Hi, it’s Sailor … wondering if my Dorothy will ever come back, and if she does will she bring me reindeer treats?  Here’s what she sent from Helsinki (what’s a Helsinki?).

Today I crossed another major body of water off my list!  Yes, my life’s goal of sticking my toe in every major body of water on the planet has inched forward  - I’ve conquered the Baltic.  Proof is in the photo.

That makes

  • Atlantic
  • Pacific
  • Caribbean
  • Gulf of Mexico
  • Long Island Sound
  • Biscayne Bay
  • Mediterranean
  • Lake Geneva
  • North Sea
  • Baltic
  • Danube

My definition of “major body of water is pretty flexible, Pretty much includes any body of water there is, but it’s important to have goals in life.

After Stockholm I don’t know if any city could have left me as breathless, especially the next day, but Helsinki is a little gem here in the north country.  Finland is essentially a country stuck between a rock (Sweden) and a hard place (Russia).  They’ve survived by being neutral, but it’s been a delicate balance.  For years the KGB and the CIA had offices in the same building.

Once again we did the “Hop On, Hop Off” tour, which is good if you’re on a tight budget.  I think we may have gotten more out of this city if we’d done a more organized tour.  However we did see the Rock Church, which is carved out of a rock and has unfinished walls inside – great acoustics and lots of concerts are held there.  Also saw Market Square, the Olympic Arena, Senate Square and some very lovely parks.  The Finns were out sunbathing everywhere, being as I’ve continued to provide Scandinavia with absolutely perfect weather.

They’re big on reindeer here and I could have had reindeer meatballs, reindeer steaks, a reindeer rug, reindeer soup …. etc.  Couldn’t take a chance on ticking off Santa though – I’m staying on his good list as long as he’ll have me!

Haven’t yet found the Scandinavian sweater that has my name on it, but there’s still time.

Tomorrow is the Catherine & Peterhof palaces, lines are said to be long and you get herded through, but they are so breathtaking in photos that I’m very excited about seeing them in person.

Kind of a dull blog, but yesterday was a tough act to follow.

Sailor, I hope you are taking good care of Nana and I can’t wait to see you when I get home.  I’ve seen lots of people walking dogs, but none of them held a candle to you.

Keep- Calm & Sail On.
